Martin Luther King — who saw our “promised land” — it’s time we got there.

The Reverend Martin Luther King compared himself to Moses who led his people out of slavery, saw the Promised Land, but never got there himself.

In April of 1968, Martin Luther King was in Memphis, Tennessee supporting a garbage workers’ strike.

On the evening of April 3rd, King told the congregation, “I don’t know what will happen now.” He said he’d “been to the mountain top” and “seen the Promised Land” but “I may not get there with you.”

His promise, however, was that “we, as a people, will get to the Promised Land.”

Toward evening, that next day, April 4th, King stepped out on the balcony of the Lorraine Hotel in Memphis, Tennessee.

A rifleman shot a .30–06 caliber bullet that broke Dr. King’s jaw, cut through his neck and spinal cord, and the slug lay spent in his shoulder blade. King died.

Robert Kennedy said in Indianapolis to a crowd that had not yet heard of King’s death that we must “tame the savageness of man and to make gentle the life of this world.”

King couldn’t have agreed more and his prescription to reach the Promised Land was to challenge “the triple evils of racism, economic exploitation, and militarism.”

We know today that the Supreme Court decision in Dred Scott, deciding that a man was property, was wrong.

But we don’t’ seem to appreciate that a Supreme Court that compromises voting rights is also wrong.

Consider how King fought so hard to remove obstacles to the franchise so that blacks could arrive in a polling booth and throw a voting lever so that they would have recourse against how they were badly or unjustly governed

So many years later, we have a Supreme Court compromising that right to vote.

We have states interposing obstacles to that vote.

We have an outgoing autocrat who sought to diminish that right to vote to cheat the nation in the recent election.

King sought further to remedy an American system that valued property over persons and, in the bargain, short-changed workers in pay and benefits, and denied them credit, housing, education and many other opportunities — all because of race — in a form of violence, economic, that is every bit as invidious and punishing as physical violence.

The Commonwealth of Virginia brags that it attracts businesses here because workers have fewer rights, fewer benefits and thus cost less.

King was praised by many for his Ghandian ethic of non-violence in Montgomery, also on the Freedom Rides, in Albany, Birmingham and Selma.

King was dumb-founded therefore when the public and even his strongest supporters challenged his decision to oppose the war in Vietnam.

They told King that civil rights and peace didn’t mix. King said, “the relationship of this ministry to the making of peace is so obvious that I sometimes marvel at those who ask me why I am speaking against the war.”

King spoke of the devastation in ‘Nam at the hands of “deadly Western arrogance,” noting, “we are on the side of the wealthy, and the secure, while we create a hell for the poor”

King suggested a five point outline for stopping the war in Vietnam, which included a call for a unilateral ceasefire.

King claimed that America made “peaceful revolution impossible by refusing to give up the privileges and the pleasures that come from the immense profits of overseas investments.”

King urged “a radical revolution of values” emphasizing love and justice rather than economic nationalism.”

King saw capitalism, and the military industrial complex, entangled in the racism at home and the war abroad.

He saw profit-taking at the cost of human life.

Eisenhower had warned against the military industrial complex but King underscored its racism, because it sent the poor and minorities to war, sent “their sons, and their brothers, and their husbands to fight and die in extraordinarily high proportions to the rest of the population.”

War is still with us even as we consider whether to remain in the mid-east or to engage in another war theater.

There has been a perverse march to the rear — a taking back of civil rights, a compromising, diminishing and elimination of the gains that King made.

We had many protests last year because there is racism in our police departments; persons of color are killed by police while neighbors look on and record the murders.

Nor is this assault against individual rights and liberties limited to blacks and minorities.

Ask any woman.

Ask a Muslim.

Civil rights and liberties are under siege.

Our political candidates talk compassion but in this pandemic, at least in the Republican Caucus, they make light of feeding the poor, of housing, of job training, of helping the unemployed, of supporting small businesses. They approve the funds to sustain Wall Street but not Main Street.

Robert Kennedy said to those in South Africa, still fighting apartheid, but making progress, how they were making a difference for the better — and why they would succeed.

Kennedy said, “It is from numberless diverse acts of courage … that human history is thus shaped. Every time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring, those ripples build a current which can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.”

Each of us must act to bring down the walls of oppression and resistance right here at home.

If we stand on the shoulders of those who went before us, on the shoulders of Martin Luther King, and of Robert Kennedy, we reaffirm Martin and Bobby’s belief in tolerance, equality, freedom and non-violence and we cannot fail.

We owe it to King and ourselves to resume our march for, while we may have seen the Promised Land, we’ve not yet arrived there.

There are forces in this country that lack empathy and devotion to our nation and its people.

That can be the business of Biden and Harris starting high noon Wednesday.
